ILAM Professional Examination (KAIAL2014)

80 candidates, the highest number in ILAM’s history, sat for the two day ILAM Professional Examination, held in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam. The examination result witnessed 38 candidates passing the final hurdle and receiving their ILAM Corporate Membership on 28 April 2014 in Kuching, Sarawak, during the IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress.
ALAM 2014 – Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students

A landscape architecture student assembly was organised and hosted by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) this year. Local universities and colleges which offer landscape architectural course participated in the programme, which aims to foster relationship between students, idea exchanges and provide learning experiences from different institutions. As part of ILAM’s support for landscape architecture education, the ILAM President was invited to deliver the closing speech for this annual affair.

A courtesy call was organised by ILAM to meet the newly appointed Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing & Local Government, YB Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan. During the meeting, ILAM introduced the profession and presented our intention on a number of industry matters concerned with local landscape architectural practices, especially the need for a Landscape Architect Act to further protect local practitioners in this era of liberalisation.
ILAM Hosted IFLA2014
Asia Pacific Congress

The IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress was successfully organised by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia in Kuching, Sarawak, with delegates from 20 countries and a total congress participation of 308. The International Student Charrette Programme welcomed some 150 participants from various local universities and international students from Japan, Australia, Indonesia, China and the Philippines. National Landscape Day Celebration

The annual National Landscape Day was once again held, this time in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. ILAM joined other related industry players and councils by putting up a pop-up exhibit at the celebration site. ILAM Sabah Chapter members supported the exhibition by showcasing some of their projects in Sabah. The exhibition was visited by Sabah Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Musa Haji Aman.
ILAM-IFLA Award of Distinction for Landscape Architecture

The most historical moment in ILAM history was the special recognition award: “ILAM-IFLA Award of Distinction for Landscape Architecture” presented by ILAM President, LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib to Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, ILAM Honorary Member, and also Malaysia’s former Prime Minister. Following the award ceremony, Tun delivered a Prime Keynote on the theme: “Malaysia - A Greener Tomorrow”.

ILAM, with the collaboration of the National Landscape Department (JLN), led by the Director General, LAr. Haji Esa Ahmad, made a courtesy call to the newly appointed Legal Advisor of the Legal Department in the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing & Local Government (KPKT), YBhg. Dato’ Azlan bin Abdul Halim. Among the meeting highlights was the need for the formulation of a Landscape Architect Act, which further protects and enhances the profession and other matters related to the profession.

World Landscape Architecture Month Celebration & Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards

Each year, the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), presents the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards to outstanding Malaysian landscape architecture firms, developers, government agencies, contractors, researchers, and students for projects, research papers, or design work completed in Malaysia and abroad. These awards honour the best in landscape architecture from various aspects of the industry. This event is part of the World Landscape Architecture Month Celebration and also acts as the closing ceremony of the IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress.

This was a two day course, focused on providing a basic introduction to landscape design and the importance of landscape planning for each development, the fundamental planning concept, maintenance, and much more. IFLA World Congress & World Council Meeting 2014, Argentina

Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah represented ILAM as country delegate and IFLA Asia Pacific President for the IFLA2014 World Council and Regional Meeting at Consejo Profesional de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (CPAU). This annual meeting was part of the most anticipated IFLA World Congress 2014 which was held from 5-7 June 2014 at Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA).

LAr. Noriah Mat represented ILAM at the meeting about developing a new tool for Green Building Index Assessment Criteria for Townships. This initiative was developed by the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) with the participation of multi-disciplinary professions such as landscape architects, architects, planners and engineers.
Universal Design & Accessibility Seminar for Local Government

LAr. Abd Aziz Othman represented ILAM at a seminar aimed at creating awareness among local governments about universal designs to assist the disabled. The emphasis was placed upon the importance and implementation of new ideas, in reference to the OKU Act 2008, UBBL, MS1184, MS1183, MS1331 and other existing legislation.

Malaysia’s much-awaited flower and garden festival kicked up a storm once again this year with exciting colours and a wide variety of flora beyond the imagination. This year, ILAM was involved in the jury session and presented 5 designers’ gardens brought forth from the creativity of our members.
The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA)

The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) which was hosted by CIDB Malaysia is intended to be the Malaysian premier accolade for all round excellence. It is an effort to recognise the players’ achievements in the industry. The awards recognise individuals and/or organisations who have contributed and demonstrated excellence in enhancing the image, performance and improvement of the construction industry. LAr. Noriah Mat represented ILAM as one of the panel jurors at the judging session.
“Keceriaan Kampung FELDA”

LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib was appointed as a member of the panel for the inspection and evaluation of this national award programme. The judging process was organised by FELDA in June 2014 in several states across Malaysia. The objective of the award is to give recognition and to elevate the image of the “kampung” and to cultivate positive values and cooperation amongst the villagers to create a better living environment which are cheerful and welcoming.
MoU Signing Between ILAM and MYCEB for IFLA2020 World Congress

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between ILAM and Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB) following the successful bidding for the IFLA2020 World Congress to be held in Kuala Lumpur in August, 2020. The ILAM team was headed by LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib as the IFLA2020 World Congress committee chair and MYCEB was signed by Tan Mei Phing, the Manager of Event Support. The MoU shows the commitment of the Malaysian Government to support the organisation of this event specifically on delegate boosting and promotion from the year 2017-2020.

Greenery and Planting of
1 Million Trees Programme

This programme is a continuing effort by PKNS since 2003 to encourage the planting of trees at all PKNS development area. Greenery and planting of 1 Million Trees Programme, as its name suggests, hopes to create a livable environment by better balancing development with greenery. During the ceremony, ILAM Vice President, LAr. Sabaruddin Buang presented the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook Year 2013 to PKNS as a token of appreciation.
ILAM-MGBC CPD Seminar
“Skyrise Greenery”

ILAM kicked off this year’s Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC)-ILAM joint CPD seminar with a 1-day seminar “Skyrise Greenery”. The session was attended by about 60 professionals including Landscape Architects, Architects and Engineers. The talks covered architectural designs for skyrise garden communities, social studies, designing skyrise gardens, the vertical green system, energy efficiency, biodiversity, to urban farming on the skyrise. The seminar was concluded with panel session where a Q&A session was held. This event was jointly sponsored by Ajiya and Pentens.
MIP Planning Excellence Award

Malaysia Institute of Planners (MIP) hosted the annual Planning Excellence Awards Gala Night which is also the gathering of the planners and property industry players in Malaysia. The intention of the award is to acknowledge projects and works which are able to respond to the market needs, which is part of MIP’s efforts to encourage town planners to move towards planning excellence by demonstrating good practices, leadership and achievement. ILAM was represented by our fellow, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah and LAr. Noriah Mat who was also representing Perbadanan Putrajaya.
DBKL Urban Design Guideline

The Kuala Lumpur Physical Planning Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, launched the Kuala Lumpur City Centre Urban Design Guidelines for several key precincts, which was officiated by Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri Hj. Ahmad Phesal Haji Talib. During the ceremony, several competitions were launched for 7 precincts (KLCC, Pudu, Chow Kit, Botani, Civic, Kampung Attap, Bukit Bintang) in the city centre for precinct character and wayfinding for Artwork Design, Sculpture Design, Logo Design and Photography. This event was attended by LAr. Fairouz @ Muhammad Che Ani.
Malaysia Design Festival

MADE Festival 2014 is an event by the Malaysia Design Council (MRM) to showcase the development of design in Malaysia. ILAM, lead by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, together with several council members and Director General of National Landscape Department, LAr. Esa Hj. Ahmad, met the Legal Advisor of KPKT, Dato’ Azlan Abdul Halim, to discuss the outcome of the online public survey for the implementation of a Landscape Architects Act. As the result of the discussion, feedback from professionals will be channeled for the next course of action by the Ministry.

Recently, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) organised a Sculpture Competition as part of the urban beautification programme, to cultivate more creative city dwellers. ILAM was involved in the early stages and the judging process. On 3 October 2014, ILAM council member, LAr Samsul Rohaizat Mohd Jemoner attended the award ceremony to honour the top winners. The ceremony was graced by the city mayor, Datuk Seri Haji Ahmad Phesal Haji Talib.

A three day assembly, with the theme; “Landscape Services Key to National Environment Transformation”, was organised by the National Landscape Department, JLN. The assembly was to encourage idea sharing for value added matters in landscape services in order to transform the landscape industry in Malaysia. The session was also attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, and council members, LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan and LAr. Abu Hassan Wahab.
“River of Life” Project Technical Engagement Session

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Physical Planning Department conducted a Technical Engagement Workshop for the River of Life project Phase 2. This was done to seek feedback from all stakeholders in order to assist the consultancy firm, AECOM Perunding Sdn Bhd, to complete the development plan for Package 4A: Riverfront Precincts 8,9 and 11, as well as the preliminary design for package 4B: Brickfields, and Package 2: Titiwangsa Park. LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah represented ILAM during this session.

Therapeutic Landscape

A joint CPD talk was conducted by ILAM and Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) on the topic “Therapeutic Landscape”. The session was attended by more than 50 participants. The talk was conducted by Dr. Sa’ari Mohamad Yatim. MD from Serdang Hospital who shared his experience on the best design for therapeutic gardens in the hospital. Dr. Shureen Farid Abdul Shukor from UPM shared her research findings about healing gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. The meeting was concluded with a sharing session by Malaysia’s Gardening Icon, Haji Abdul Rahim Rashid, on how to communicate with plants via human touch, love and music.
CIDB National Green Building Measurement Study Trip and Training

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) organised a study and training trip to Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa with the objective to learn 80-100 methods of Green Practice from Zero Garbage Management, Water & Energy Conservation, Recycling, Composting and more. As part of the professional body which contributes to national development, ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir joined in this event.
Research Priority Areas for Urban Greenery and Landscape

A workshop was organised by the Faculty of Design and Architecture to specially formulate and brainstorm the priority areas for research. In particular, the topics of urban greenery and landscape. The workshop was attended by educators, policy makers and also landscape architects, including ILAM members. The result will be a future guideline for research topics about urban greenery.
IFLA Asia Pacific Regional Cultural Landscape Symposium 2014

The “International Conference of Cultural Landscape” is annually held by the cultural landscape committee of IFLA Asia-Pacific Region. The conference provides an opportunity for cultural landscape experts around the world to exchange views and share their experiences.

Workshop on
Draft Landscape Architects Act

This two days workshop was organised by the National Landscape Department. The focus was on the final draft of the Landscape Architects Act, with the preparation of the rules and schedules (Scale of Fees, Professional Code & Ethic, Accreditation Standard, Disciplinary Procedure, forms and others), which are to be read together with the Act. This workshop was jointly attended by ILAM President and Council Members. With this move, we hope the Landscape Architects Act will be ready by the end of the year to be tabled to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia and also the cabinet.

A courtesy call was made to meet the Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, YBhg. Dato’ Muhammad Khairun. The meeting focused on delivery of ILAM’s Special Notes to the Prime Minister on the current and the future landscape architecture profession in Malaysia with emphasis on the needs of Landscape Architects Act for national development. Via this meeting, ILAM also extended a formal invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards Night and to honour the Prime Minister as ILAM Honorary Member.
Launching of Putrajaya Urban Farming Programme

The Putrajaya Urban Farming Programme was launched to cultivate community farming activities in the urban area and also to foster community relationships via farming. This programme is a joint effort between Perbadanan Putrajaya, MARDI, Putrajaya Community Corporation Berhad and is also under the Local Agenda 21 initiatives. The programme was launched by the President of Perbadanan Putrajaya, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr.) Aseh Haji Che Mat, and attended by LAr. Danial A. Hasan, and LAr. Samsul Rohaizat Mohd Jemoner, who represented ILAM.
ILAM-MGBC CPD Talk: Aquascape

A joint CPD talk was conducted by ILAM and Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) on the topic “Aquascape”. Once again, the talk received overwhelming support from industry professionals and also the media. The half day talk focused on two topics: Sky Beach and Water Based Activity Design by Nicole Van Den Steenhoven, from Bukit Kiara Properties, and Unique Aquatic Play Experience by Kirk Hutchinson from Waterplay Solutions. The talk was jointly sponsored by Nippon Paint and Playpoint.
Forum LAMPU 2014

As part of the efforts by Perbadanan Putrajaya to vitalize Putrajaya, the inaugural Putrajaya Light and Motion Festival (LAMPU2014) was held at Dataran Putrajaya for two nights from 12 to 13 December. Major buildings in the area were lit, along with fun lighting activities and a light mapping showcase for the public to enjoy. In conjunction with the festival, a forum on lighting was organised by Perbadanan Putrajaya. ILAM was represented by council member, LAr. Fairuz Che Ani, corporate member, LAr. Dr. Nurhayati Abdul Malek and ILAM Administrator, Puan Zarina Muis.
Belum Temengor Expedition 02:

About 50 ILAM members joined a 3 day expedition to Royal Belum. The aim was to study and discover the natural beauty of Royal Belum and its inhabitats. The highlight was the visit to an Orang Asli village to hand over donated items from our members, with the collaboration of Yayasan Emkay. The participants also had the chance to learn about the landscape planning and design of Belum Rainforest Resort, via a talk by LAr. Fairouz Che Ani, from Mentari Design.

The annual Sustainable Tropical Environmental Design Exhibition (STEDex 2014) is back again, showcasing the best design from the faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM on sustainable design ideas and products. In conjunction with this exhibition, a catalogue book was also published. This year, the exhibition was launched by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arham Abdullah, Director, Industry Relation Unit, Ministry of Education Malaysia.
